I prefer moon and stars to city lights

Summer days and Autumn nights

A baseball field to a ballroom floor

A welcome mat and an open door

To laugh until your face is strained

A thunderstorm with the falling rain

A blanket under a tall oak tree

Listening to the cicadas sing

I prefer the smell of fresh cut grass

To city smog and burning gas

A big’ole hug to a dollar bill

A loving God to a passing thrill

I prefer my life be filled with tears

From utter joy to conquered fears

To meet each day with freshened eyes

Excited hellos and long goodbyes

The hope of all things new to come

I prefer the pain to being numb

A family’s love to a casual fling

A softball glove to a diamond ring

The grinning face of a happy dog

The misty morning’s rolling fog

I prefer an ice cold beer to a glass of wine

A sky of blue to a billboard sign

A nap in a tube on a river float

To a catered cruise on a fancy boat

I prefer to pray for a better day

Than to fret when things don’t go my way

The Texas heat to the New York cold

Staying young but growing old.
